Heading to Oahu! Exploring Polynesian Culture and Sustainable Business Across the Pacific

Heading to Oahu! Exploring Polynesian Culture and Sustainable Business Across the Pacific

NTU Office of International Affairs (OIA), in collaboration with sister institution Brigham Young University–Hawaii (BYU–Hawaii) and local partners, hosted the 2026 NTU Hawaii – Austronesian Culture and Sustainable Management, leading 12 interdisciplinary NTU students to Oahu for an immersive exploration of Polynesian culture, sustainable business, and cross-cultural exchange.

Under the guidance of BYUH, students visited the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) to explore how cultural performances and business operations work together, while learning about the unique ecosystem connecting BYUH and PCC through the iWORK internship program. The program enables BYUH students to gain practical work experience while completing their studies and contributes to the preservation and transmission of Pacific Island cultures. Students also visited The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay, gaining insights into how sustainability can be integrated into luxury hospitality, and met with the founder of local brand Seven Brothers to explore how the values of “Faith, Family, and Food” have shaped a successful community-oriented business.

Beyond industry visits, the traineeship incorporated campus and local life experiences. Students exchanged ideas with BYUH students and visited the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where they met Taiwanese students and gained firsthand perspectives on studying and living in Hawaii. Outdoor activities including surfing and ziplining further allowed participants to experience the island's natural environment and way of life.

The traineeship also highlighted connections between Polynesian and Indigenous cultures in Taiwan through their shared Austronesian heritage. With several Indigenous NTU students participating, Austronesian culture became more than an academic concept—it became a meaningful opportunity for cross-ocean cultural exchange and dialogue.

Through this nine-day journey, students explored how Oahu connects cultural preservation, education, business, and sustainability, gaining a deeper understanding of how an island community can balance cultural heritage with modern development and create new possibilities for sustainable growth.
