▌Unlocking Tokyo: A Nine-Day Innovation and Entrepreneurship Journey! NTU's Traineeship Program Blends Career Exploration with Cultural Immersion.
This summer, the NTUOIA once again partnered with Water Mirror, a key partner in the "NTU Overseas Internship Program," to launch the second installment of the NTU Beyond Borders: Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow. From century-old and multinational corporations to startups and government bodies like the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, students gained deep insights into Japan's venture capital ecosystem and industrial development through a series of in-depth exchanges across various sectors.
We stepped into the core of different Japanese industries, learning the wisdom of century-long management and the spirit of craftsmanship from Shinbashi Tamakiya, a company with a 300-year history. At global e-commerce giant Rakuten Group, we discussed talent development strategies with their multinational HR team. At List Sotheby's International Realty and DCI Partners (Daiwa Corporate Investment), we decoded global real estate trends and the operational models of venture capital. We then connected virtually with Tokyo Electron to understand talent needs and strategies in Taiwan and Japan. We even had a dialogue with the century-old beauty brand Hollywood Cosmetics, gaining insights into their innovative transformation and market development in Taiwan. Finally, we had an in-depth exchange with Miyako Capital, a venture capital firm certified with Kyoto University, to deconstruct Japan's venture capital ecosystem and investment landscape. Each company visit was a new inspiration for future careers, giving students a more tangible understanding and vision of different industries.
Beyond the intensive corporate learning, the group also immersed themselves in Japanese culture. We made Japanese rice balls and wagashi (traditional Japanese confections), participated in a tea ceremony, and experienced the perfect fusion of technology and aesthetics at the digital art museum TeamLab in Odaiba. At the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), we envisioned how cutting-edge Japanese technology could change the future.
The biggest takeaway from this Tokyo tour was the valuable network we built. We visited the Tokyo Innovation Base, a key hub for promoting startups in Tokyo, to understand the local support and policies for new ventures. More importantly, we held a career exchange with Taiwanese people living in Japan, where we received authentic cross-border career advice from professionals in diverse fields like technology, consulting, and venture capital. This helped us clarify many questions about developing a career abroad and planted valuable seeds for the future career paths of our students.
