▌NTU Beyond Borders: Exploring Czech Republic's Centuries-Old Companies and Innovative Startups, Unveiling the Mysteries of Bohemia!
This summer, the NTU OIA partnered with the CTBC Czech Taiwanese Business Chamber launched the "NTU x CTBC Traineeship: Czechia - Entrepreneurship in Motion". The program did more than just take participants to the heart of the Czech Republic, it also unravelled the nation's DNA through exploring diverse perspectives on business, startups, social impact, and culture, all while sampling the solid friendship between Taiwan and the Czech Republic.
The group met with key figures, including Pavel Fischer, Chairperson of the Czech Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security; Ambassador Ke Liang-ruey, Taiwan's representative to the Czech Republic Tchaj-wan v Česku ; Pavel Diviš, Chairman of the Czech-Taiwanese Business Chamber; and the European Values Center for Security Policy. These meetings provided deep insights into how Taiwan and the Czech Republic have developed such a close and inseparable relationship in recent years, thanks to their shared values and complementary industries.
Participants delved into the core of Czech technology, visiting numerous startups and major companies to see the nation's technological prowess firsthand. We visited the Hilase Centre cutting-edge laser research center, Prusa Research 3D printers , a 3D printing company that holds a Guinness World Record, and the Škoda factory to see the complete production line of this century-old car brand.
Discussions were also had with TGS, a company that imports Taiwanese machine tools; Aveo Engineering, a global leader in aerospace lighting; and Vrgineers, a virtual reality company in which the Taiwanese government has invested. These conversations highlighted the close connections between Taiwanese technology and Czech industry. We also spoke with the bike-sharing service Rekola to discuss trends in the sharing economy.
Technology was not the only focus of this visit—it was also a deep dive into Czech culture. We learned glassmaking at a century-old factory, creating our own art; we learned about the legendary techniques of KarelZeman and the fun of animation production; and we explored the craftsmanship behind Czech marionettes, a national treasure.
We also visited the Smíchov district, where an old brewery has been revitalized into a creative hub, and the picturesque spa town of KarlovyVary, where we had an in-depth conversation with a film festival curator, experiencing the rich and diverse facets of Czech culture.
This internship program helped students appreciate the Czech Republic not as a distant or unfamiliar country, but as a dynamic centre of innovation and a thriving industrial hub.
