Instill AI was founded in 2020 and specializes in developing AI models and data processing tools. This year, during its seed funding round, the company secured $3.6 million in investments from institutions including RTP Global, Hive Ventures, and Cornerstone Ventures, managing over $3 billion in assets.
The founder, Ping-Lin Chang, is a native of Pingtung, Taiwan. He was also a co-founder and CTO of the AI security company Umbo Computer Vision inc. How did he leverage his past experience and pain points to embark on a second entrepreneurial journey and address the issues faced by AI and data engineers?
A Ph.D. in Computer Science from Imperial College London, co-founder of Umbo Computer Vision inc. Technology, and founder of Instill AI, Ping-Lin Chang's qualifications are closely tied to computer science and entrepreneurship. In fact, his interest in computers began to bud during his student years. For instance, when portable MP3 players were becoming popular during his middle school years, Chang set up a website to upload music for free downloading. He was always interested in new technologies, but due to his residence in Pingtung and limited exposure to such opportunities, he regularly purchased tech magazines from bookstores to satisfy his curiosity.
"I knew back then that I wasn't interested in the subjects taught in school, only in computers." However, Chang often struggled with low grades, and being seen as a "problem student" for not focusing on conventional studies made him realize that his area of interest might not align with societal norms. Thus, "entrepreneurship" became a keyword for his future career.
After completing his Ph.D. in the UK and becoming acquainted with Umbo Computer Vision inc., Chang believed in the value of the company's products and saw an opportunity to leverage his expertise. In 2015, he made a resolute decision to join the company, becoming one of its co-founders and the Chief Technology Officer. Umbo Computer Vision inc. later developed AI image recognition software for security applications, enabling surveillance systems to automatically identify security events. This achievement was made possible by the technology team led by Ping-Lin Chang.
