Taiwan Team Wins 6 Gold and 4 Silver Medals at the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition, Aims to Upgrade Resources to Retain Talent

Taiwanese students recently participated in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition in France, where over 400 teams worldwide competed. Despite receiving recognition with 6 gold and 4 silver medals, participants believe that it highlights the urgent need for related education policies, industry connections, and international resource integration in Taiwan.

The 2023 iGEM competition concluded on the 5th at the Paris-Versailles Exhibition Center, with participation from over 400 teams globally, involving nearly 9,000 attendees.

Taiwan had 6 university teams and 7 high school teams participating this year, collectively earning 6 gold and 4 silver medals in the evaluation.

After the evaluation, outstanding teams in each competition category were nominated for the top awards, with intense competition. National Chung Cheng University was nominated for the Best Diagnostic Award, Kang Chiao International School, Linkou Campus received dual nominations for Best Presentation and Wiki, and Washington High School in Taiwan was nominated for Best Education.

iGEM, established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003, is a world-class synthetic biology competition. It provides students from various countries with the opportunity to use interdisciplinary knowledge, particularly in synthetic biology, to address daily global challenges. The competition serves as a platform for early international assessment of each country's talent education, technological development, and integration of the biotechnology and biomedical sectors with interdisciplinary technology.

In their first year of competition, Kang Chiao International School, Linkou Campus stood out among 121 teams in the global high school category with their theme "Autonomous Production of Lumbricinase by Probiotics." They were the only Taiwanese team to receive nominations for two special awards and received gold recognition.
