MediaTek Broadens Recruitment of Global Talent - Cultural Conflicts Transformed into Assets

MediaTek, in its ongoing efforts to globalize its operations, is actively recruiting talent from various countries. Gemma Noonan, the Human Resources Manager for MediaTek in Europe, notes that the company's UK branch attracts elites from the UK, France, China, and other countries. Given the shared engineering and technical background of the team, there are no cultural conflicts, as everyone is united in pushing high-quality products to market.

The establishment of a MediaTek presence in the UK, close to Cambridge University, results in an annual influx of students seeking employment. To attract and recruit talent, MediaTek annually offers several internship positions, aiming to familiarize students with the company's global positioning and strategy.

Noonan reveals that MediaTek's UK branch typically opens about six internship positions each year, with the Finland branch offering between six to nine positions, attracting a significant number of student applicants. MediaTek's internship program provides ample opportunities for conversion to full-time positions, making it a popular choice for students seeking their first professional job before graduation.

Engineers often face tight deadlines and intense pressure from clients and competitors. In response, MediaTek's UK branch has created an open office environment without high walls between desks, facilitating discussions and communication. Notably, the office desks are adjustable, allowing employees to switch between sitting and standing, fostering quick impromptu meetings around the desk.

To address the stress associated with heavy workloads, MediaTek's UK branch offers yoga classes and provides recreational spaces like table tennis rooms and fitness areas for employees to unwind. Qian Chu, an employee at MediaTek's UK branch, mentions that he has been working at the company for four years since graduating from Southampton University and appreciates the adapted lifestyle. While he has adjusted well, he humorously mentions the only challenge is adapting to the local cuisine, expressing a preference for Chinese meals.

Noonan emphasizes that MediaTek's UK branch, with employees from various European countries, India, and Southeast Asia, collaborates seamlessly without cultural conflicts. The shared goal is to excel in product technology, emphasizing a harmonious work environment.
