Ping-Lin holds a PhD in Robotic Vision from Imperial College London (2014), with a research focus on Visual Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (VSLAM) and Machine Learning (ML) for Augmented Reality (AR) in image-guided surgery. His work resulted in papers in top-tier conference/journal publications, including MICCAI, TMI, RAL, and MRR. In 2015, he co-founded Umbo Computer Vision and held the CTO position, developing the company’s technical moat and leading the AI, back-end, front-end, and DevOps teams to build AI-first products for autonomous video security. These products have been sold in the US, EU, and Asia, helping business owners significantly reduce human operation costs and improve business scalability. In 2020, Ping-Lin co-founded Instill AI with Xiaofei Du to build the infrastructure for unstructured data ETL, making AI more accessible to all industry sectors.
Instill AI is on a mission to make AI more accessible to everyone. We approach this goal by developing no-/low-code tools to build the backbone of all AI-first applications and products. At Instill AI, we research and develop Instill VDP (Versatile Data Pipeline), the pipeline infrastructure that can connect with many AI solutions and data sources, and Instill Model, the MLOps system to keep AI models used in VDP performant. We are a small and ambitious team of passionate engineers/researchers sharing an unconventional culture fused by DevOps, MLOps and academia. We are hands-on and love to automate everything. We care about our products and deliver to the highest standard.
In this internship program, you'll have the opportunity to get paid while working on open-source projects, applying cutting-edge best practices and architecture in areas such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC), microservices, serverless computing, API-first design, Twelve-Factor Apps, zero-trust networks, and message queues. You'll be responsible for designing and developing highly scalable, high-quality APIs and services, as well as maintaining robust database systems. You will also develop data integration standards for unstructured data, crafting processes and logic to extract, transform, and distribute data from diverse sources. Collaborating with other ML/AI engineers, you'll integrate machine learning systems into data pipelines. In addition, you'll work closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and product designers to deliver complex, high-quality backend features that are on our roadmap. Throughout all these tasks, delivering high-quality software and documentation will be a key focus.
