Before applying, students are encouraged to reflect on the points outlined below. Internships may require individuals to adapt to different working cultures, assist with occasional hands-on tasks, and remain flexible when plans or expectations change.
While an internship is designed to offer meaningful professional experience, it is important to approach placements with a spirit of openness and adaptability. Workplaces vary across sectors, cultures, and countries — and part of the learning journey is being able to navigate those differences constructively.
All information provided on this website is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of publication. However, internship arrangements and host details can sometimes change due to factors beyond our control. A flexible and professional attitude is key to a successful internship.
Professional working life requires flexibility. If a host organisation operates over weekends, holidays, or irregular hours, students are expected to be respectful of this and adapt where appropriate. This includes being tolerant of peak periods, company-wide events, or other occasional variations in schedule. Such experiences offer valuable insight into how different industries and teams operate in real-world settings.
Although internships are professional in nature, students may occasionally be asked to assist with manual tasks. This is especially likely if a host organisation operates a production line, runs public events, or fosters a collaborative environment where everyone contributes to day-to-day operations. These moments of practical contribution are considered equally valuable to professional development, as long as they do not make up the majority of internship duties.
It is also important to recognise that every internship is unique, and direct comparisons with others can be misleading. Differences in working hours, tasks, and benefits may arise based on the host organisation’s structure, timing, or individual agreements. In some cases, students may be working alongside others who are part of different programmes or have separate arrangements. Many factors operate behind the scenes, so students are encouraged to focus on their own placement experience and approach it with a positive and open mindset.
Overseas internships, by their nature, can be unpredictable. Tasks can evolve, plans may be adjusted, and unforeseen challenges occasionally arise. It is essential that students maintain regular communication with the OIP team and approach any such developments in a constructive and professional manner.
In addition to workplace responsibilities, students participating in internships also have ongoing requirements for NTU, such as worklogs, reflective assignments, reports, or assessments linked to their placement. It is the student’s responsibility to remain aware of these requirements and manage their time accordingly.
