Japan has an "Akiya" problem. An Akiya (空き家) is a vacant or abandoned house in Japan, and due to the aging population and urban migration, an abundance of such homes are being left behind. This number continues to grow, contributing to the slow and quiet demise of hundreds of small, historical villages across Japan.

Many people in Japan and around the world want to help, but the path is neither straightforward nor cheap. Current efforts usually involve a small number of wealthy individuals and focus more on demolition than on conservation.

AKIYA2.0's vision is to make it feasible for both native landowners and newcomers in Japan to renovate individual properties, improve their assets, and thus reinvigorate their communities. Our unique model multiplies small, localized efforts to create new, sustainable communities that are rooted in history but also secure in their future.
