I worked on genome characterisation and assembly quality control for several plant species as part of a broader biodiversity genomics effort, learning tools and workflows I had never touched before, and slowly becoming someone who could troubleshoot a broken pipeline instead of simply being stopped by it. It is one thing to be interested in bioinformatics or genomics in the abstract, from a classroom or a textbook; it is another thing entirely to sit with real data, real coworkers, and real problems for months at a time, and to notice which parts of that experience genuinely energise you. I noticed that I liked the collaborative parts of research more than I expected, the moments of explaining something to a colleague, or being explained something patiently in return, more than I liked working in total isolation.
