My return from Awaji left me with even more questions than answers, which I consider one of the most beneficial results of the traineeship. How can regions recruit new people without losing their identity? How can investments create a real future for their residents? How can the culture stay alive and not become symbolic? And how can sustainability be ensured not just in environmental projects, but in the future of a community overall? Long time ago, my attitude towards Awaji was that of a researcher and designer looking for an area to solve some problems. But after finally visiting it, I see it in a new light: as an ongoing project of a living community with constant negotiations of revitalization between heritage and innovation, identity and external points of view, ambitions and realities.
