The trip also made me think more about the meaning of sustainability. Before coming to Hawaii, I often connected sustainability only with things like recycling, saving energy, or protecting the environment. After this experience, I started to understand that sustainability can also include culture and community. A place is not truly sustainable if its natural environment is protected but its traditions and local identity slowly disappear. Hawaii showed me that protecting culture can be just as important as protecting nature. I also began to compare Hawaii with Taiwan. Both are islands surrounded by the ocean, both have mountainous landscapes, and both have their own indigenous and maritime cultures. Seeing how Hawaii uses its natural environment, cultural heritage, and tourism together made me wonder how Taiwan could also make better use of its own local culture without losing its original character.
