My internship also opened my eyes and gave me a whole new perspective on the world. Out here in the rural highlands of Guatemala, life is not easy for them. Some people live in super remote areas with no clean drinking water, and some families don't even have electricity because they still have to burn firewood just to cook and keep warm. On top of that, gender inequality is still a huge issue, healthcare is way too expensive and hard to come by, and Indigenous Mayans face an invisible glass ceiling when trying to find jobs in the city. So many kids have to drop out of school early just to work, and a lot of people end up leaving for the U.S. just to survive. Basic needs and education that I used to take for granted in my everyday life are exceedingly difficult to attain for many people here.
