One of my most valuable gains from this summer was from talking to people in other labs. In my case, I found the HCI lab nearby interesting after coming here. What’s more surprising is that one of the PhDs of that group will be an assistant professor at the school I’m going to be an exchange student at. He invited me for a chat and later even agreed to have me do research during my upcoming exchange, even though I basically have no HCI experience prior to that conversation. My takeaway here is that people are usually much more welcoming and open for a conversation with you being physically on campus and doing a research here, so just don’t be afraid.
