I used to think that once an important object was found at a crime scene, evidence had been discovered and the case had moved forward. However, after participating in a simulated crime scene investigation, I understood that “finding evidence” and “making evidence valuable” are different things. It also made me realize the distance between “I know” and “I can prove.” At first, I saw a wildlife crime scene. Then, I began to see evidence and how law, science, and investigative procedures gave meaning to it. Eventually, what I saw extended beyond the crime scene to a much larger ecosystem, market, society, and institutional system. Perhaps real conservation is not about removing humans from nature or choosing the side of either animals or people. Instead, it is about asking: when our spaces inevitably overlap, how can we find a way to coexist?
