I embarked on this two-week traineeship with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. My academic field is not closely related to animals or conservation, and I did not possess any specialized knowledge in these areas. Once we began the coursework at the Wildlife Forensic Academy, we were required to think critically about safety procedures, site preservation, and evidence collection methods in poaching investigations. Crime scene management was particularly fascinating. The instructors designed numerous scenarios to help us understand the real challenges we might encounter and created many situations that required us to respond to unexpected developments. Although our performance was not always ideal, the debriefing sessions allowed us to clearly recognize our blind spots. While I sometimes felt frustrated by my own oversights, the experience deepened my respect for professionals who work in this field. In the end, however, the experience was immensely rewarding and left me with a profound sense of accomplishment.
