Some of the most valuable lessons I took from this trip, however, came not from feeling capable, but from feeling humbled. I remember a rewarding two-hour conversation in which I listened to two senior students speak with real sincerity about their fields. I couldn't offer the kind of professional insight or sharp questions that my teammates could, each drawing from their own area of expertise. But I learned something that belonged entirely to me: don't be afraid to take the long way around. Sometimes the detour is the shortest path after all.
