One of the most important lessons from the internship has been to approach unfamiliar practices with curiosity before jumping into judgement. At first I sometimes interpreted working methods primarily through the lens of efficiency. I gradually came to understand that a process that appears slow or inconvenient to an outsider may reflect relationships, regulations, or resource limitations that are not immediately apparent. TFCF Jordan’s staff generally respect the working styles of partner CBOs and cannot simply force them to adopt a uniform system. The CBOs possess community relationships, cultural understanding and local practical knowledge that an international organisation does not have. Language also shaped what I could observe and how fully I could participate. Much of the communication among staff, CBO representatives, and families took place in Arabic. Even when colleagues translated key information for me, I could not access every nuance.
