Compared with my research experience in Taiwan, the greatest difference was the degree of independence in how the work progressed. Often, I would first discuss a question or direction with the professor, then break down the problem, design and run experiments, organize the results, and bring my observations back for discussion. The research process was not always smooth. A large portion of the time went into debugging, checking whether the results were trustworthy, and considering whether the next experiment could actually answer the original question.
