Personally, the change is larger. I came here interested in wildlife and I am leaving interested in the space between science and the public. The strongest moments of the internship were not the moments closest to the animals. They were the moments when someone explained a difficult idea so clearly that my mind changed: the paintball gun, the white flag, the jar of microplastics, the lion in the snare. Every one of those was a piece of teaching. That is the work I want to do. For my future study and career I now want to keep combining conservation with education and digital learning, whether that means environmental education, science communication, or instructional design for organisations that cannot afford to send everyone into the field. The academy's problem is a common one: the training is excellent but expensive, and only a small number of students can travel to South Africa.
