I entered the Catalina Museum thinking of curation as something that happened inside an exhibition room. I leave the internship with a much broader understanding: curation can happen on a street, in a garden, in a conversation with an artist, or in the moment when a visitor suddenly sees a familiar place differently. For me, the most meaningful part of this internship has been discovering that bringing art to the public is not simply about displaying something for people to see. It is about creating connections—between art and history, between artists and communities, and ultimately between people and the places they call home. More than confirming my interest in museums, this experience has helped me understand what kind of museum professional I want to become. I want to work at the intersection of artists, institutions, and the public, helping cultural ideas travel beyond traditional exhibition spaces.
