Before the trip, I asked myself: Do people in Guatemala really need our help? Is my visit just annoying or selfish? But after seeing how Xela Aid (Local Hope) works, my doubts went away. They are truly helping the community at the root of the problem. One afternoon, we sat in a circle on white plastic chairs. Leslie led an activity to help us understand each other. Even though we come from different places, the sadness of losing a family member is the same everywhere. People who lost their loved ones held each other and cried. As Leslie said after the activity, "We are really not that different." I will also keep an open and humble heart to learn from every unique place in the world. A period of joyful days, where whenever our eyes met, I could always receive a smile in return.
