By the end of this program, I realized that even a small effort can mean the world to someone else—leaving a meaningful impact not only on their lives, but also on my own. While spending time with the children at Xela Aid, I communicated with them using fewer than five Spanish words that I knew. Being able to connect across different cultures and get to know one another, surrounded by love and care, is what I am most proud of. I learned about how an NGO operates and the kinds of structures and planning that may be needed to support local communities. Beyond addressing current circumstances, it is also important to have long-term plans and a vision for the sustainability of the local community. At the same time, development should preserve the unique characteristics of the local area.
