The best part, though, wasn't the research itself — it was the people. I had a few PhD students as mentors, and they were super nice and genuinely professional about it, staying patient with me even when I clearly had no idea what I was doing at first. That made a huge difference; it never felt like I'd been thrown into the deep end alone.
